As a result, the majors have communicated their plans to expand the fresher hiring program in fiscal 2023.

In the company’s earnings call last month, TCS chief HR officer Milind Lakkad said the company has already hired around 77,000 freshers in the nine months of this year, and “are planning to hire some more in Q4 (January-March 2022).”

In India, Cognizant (which follows Jan to Dec as its fiscal year) hired a record 33,000 college graduates in 2020, up from 17,000. “In 2022, we plan to add approximately 50,000 in India,” ToI quoted Cognizant CEO Brian Humphries as saying.

Wipro will hire 70 percent more fresh talent from the campus in FY22 than the previous year, according to CEO Thierry Delaporte.

A recent report from research firm UnearthInsight estimates that freshers will land jobs at top IT services companies between 3,50,000 and 3,60,000 by 2022.

“The IT industry growth outlook remains intact, despite the pandemic and this financial year, the industry is likely to achieve best ever revenue growth and will continue to add workforce as per the estimates,” Gaurav Vasu, founder and CEO, UnearthInsight, said.

In addition, attrition is a concern, which will drive fresher hires. Freshmen who go through intensive upskilling have lower dropout rates, according to analysts.

Sriram Rajagopal, managing partner of talent sourcing firm Diamondpick, said engineering graduates are likely to have more than one job option if they prepare well.

“For more complex jobs, they increase the screening criteria and make it tougher, those who make the cut get higher pay,” he added.

With the changing trends, soft skills are getting equal attention as technical skills as today.

“When it comes to freshers, companies are on the lookout for candidates who are equipped with analytical thinking, stress management, communication skills, emotional intelligence and a positive attitude,” said Neeti Sharma, co-founder of HR firm Teamlease Edtech.
